Brookline College

Brookline College is an independent, accredited institution with campuses in Albuquerque, NM, Phoenix, AZ, Tempe, AZ and Tucson, AZ as well as online courses and degree programs. Brookline specializes in preparing students to meet the constantly changing employment requirements of business, industry, public service organizations and medical support agencies functioning in a highly advanced and expanding technological hiring environment.

Challenge: Increase Student Recruitment, Retention & Employability

Brookline’s Director of Employer Relations in Albuquerque recognized that one of the challenges facing recruitment and retention was identifying where students needed the most attention in their reading and math aptitude. For example, in the Medical Assistant program, some students struggled with course reading requirements which could lead to decreased success or the loss of the student in the program. Also, a key employer in the community was First Choice Community Health (FCCH) who had recently started using WorkKeys® to assess Medical Assistant candidates but the school itself had no way to measure if their graduating students would meet FCCH’s requirements.

Solution: Cognitive Skills Testing & Training

Independently from the above challenge, Brookline College had become a WorkKeys testing center in partnership with TalentABQ. As a result, Brookline started using WorkKeys to benchmark the cognitive skills of their Medical Assistant students. Skill scores were then used by faculty to determine where they could provide additional support to students. KeyTrain, a skills curriculum which targets specific work skills, was used to improve fundamental cognitive skills, providing a key connection between the program and employability. Since implementing skills testing and training in the Medical Assistant program, both the Nursing and Pharmacy Tech programs are developing similar plans to benchmark and improve the skills needed to succeed in their chosen careers.
